Creation Story Driving the winding road through the Victorian Alps, I crossed a small stream and caught, in a fleeting glance, something that didn’t belong—or perhaps belonged more than anything else. A lone tree stood poised in the middle of the water, suspended in brilliant autumn gold.
Drawn by its quiet defiance, I pulled over. Just metres from the road, the scene revealed itself—fragile, luminous, and improbably placed. In a country where deciduous trees are rare, its presence felt almost like a secret, as though the landscape had allowed this moment only briefly, and only for those who happened to notice.
I returned years later, searching for it again. But the tree was gone. Perhaps taken by a flood, or simply reclaimed by time and gravity. In its place lay only a tangle of lifeless debris gathered against the rocks—no trace of the brilliance that once stood there. What remains is not the tree, but the moment—and the quiet reminder that nothing we witness is ever ours to keep.
